A Customer Complaint

As is obvious, we don’t post all that often, and this post is a little long, but today something very unusual happened at the Ladybug.

We had a customer come in and tell us that, for the last three years all of the Danish tapers she had bought for Christmas use had dripped. Badly. She said that the quality of the candles had deteriorated and that she might as well buy candles from the dollar store. Needless to say we were surprised.

We started to ask our standard questions: Was there a draft? Were the wicks trimmed? Irritated, she touched her silver hair and said that she knew how to burn candles. We pointed out that we have been carrying the same brand of Danish candles for most of 30 years and have rarely had negative comments. She indicated that she didn’t like what she was hearing and left in a bit of a huff. We could tell she was not happy with our response, but we felt she also didn’t want to have a discussion. We do try to validate our customers feelings, and when there is a problem we really do want to resolve it. We felt we weren’t given a chance.

The two other customers in the store were rather taken aback by the exchange. “She must have gotten out of the wrong side of bed this morning” observed one. We were quite upset ourselves. Why not just chalk up today’s encounter as an anomaly and let it pass? Well, because it’s a “teachable moment”.

First of all on customer relations: We didn’t get ahead of this customer’s concerns quickly enough. We should have guessed that, if it took her three years to mention a problem, she might have had to summon her courage to complain in the first place, and was thus likely to be defensive. A bit more attentiveness and validation might have helped.

Secondly, this is a good time to review a few things about candles. Like all products, they are not always perfect. Sometimes an individual candle may be defective. The wick might be off-center, there may be an air bubble or an inclusion in the wax or the candle might be too crooked. We look at all of the candles when we put them out, so crooked ones and obvious flaws are usually caught before sale. In this case, too, the maker has excellent quality control and all candles are inspected throughout the manufacturing process. We also test burn and use these candles regularly, we know they perform well. Most years we sell 3800 to 4000 pair of candles from this maker alone. Of 7600 to 8000 candles, some are bound to be sub-par.

More often than not, though, if there is a problem it is as a result of how or where they are being burnt. That’s what always leads us to the same questions: Was there a draft? If you see the flame wiggling back and forth, or leaning consistently to one side, the candle might well start to drip. Is the wick trimmed? First to 1/4” at the outset and then with the curl removed upon re-lighting. If you see the end of the wick sticking out of the flame, or if the flame is getting long and starting to smoke, the candle should be extinguished and the wick trimmed. Is the candle perpendicular? Sometimes a taper will appear straight from one angle but actually be leaning. Always turn the holders and make sure the candle is definitely straight. Otherwise the candle will drip in the direction of the lean.

The reason we always investigate by asking these questions is that we know that candles are a little like the computers we love to blame; usually the problem is user error. Therein lies the issue: Humans don’t make mistakes, the item or the device must be defective. The fact is, if all the candles purchased in the last three years have dripped, it is highly unlikely that all of them are defective. That would be unusually bad luck. Something else is going on. It might not be obvious or it might be so obvious it would never occur to you that that’s the problem. Our solution, had we been given a chance to offer it, is to give the customer a selection of another kind of candle. We stock another kind candle called a “rustical”. They are an injection moulded candles that are extremely regular and consistent. They are the least likely to drip of all of the candles we carry. If a customer finds them dripping, the issue pretty much must be in the how and where they are being burnt.

Finally, the last part of the how and where: Candles burn best in still air. Certain spots where we like to burn candles are not actually good places for candles. Mantles above a lit fireplace or an open flue; or the center of the dining room table with all of the steam coming off the food and the hot air of conversation; or in spots near vents of an HVAC system... these are all vulnerable locations. If you know or suspect that tapers might not do well in a spot you’d like candlelit, consider floating candles, many variations on tea lights or votives or certain kinds of pillars in myriad sizes. We want you to enjoy your candles without disappointment. Even if you’ve been burning candles for decades, we may be able to make suggestions and give some advice. Never hesitate to ask! After all, it’s what we do for a living.

The Ladybug for Christmas October 8 2017

Once upon a time Victoria had no fewer than 3 dedicated Christmas stores. Last year, the "Original Christmas Village" closed after the owner died and his wife decided to sell the building and retire back to Germany. This has left Victoria with only one source of all those special Northern European Christmas items that the season requires: The Ladybug Boutique!

Our customers have always known that the Ladybug carries Scandinavian Christmas goods, but now the word is out that we also have all of the Advent, pyramid and chime candles the season requires. This year we have added beeswax Chanukah candles, as well and have vastly expanded our selection of traditional Christmas ornaments.

To give our customers lots of time to stock up, we are even going to set up Christmas a little earlier this year... Look for the little elves sneaking in after Thanksgiving!

Lately, the Danish concept of Hygge has been traveling around in meme land. Given the Scandinavian roots of our store and the fact that we are chock-a-block full of beautiful Danish candles, we have added a new tab to help you add a little Hygge to your life!

Another Holiday Season & Assorted News! October 14 2014

Hi to all fans of the Ladybug! Of course, I'm always willing to admit that I'm the worlds worst blogger, but at least the Facebook Feed is updated a few times a month!

It is hard to believe that another year is in the homestretch. A busy one it has been, too.

After most of two years, we decided to reconfigure the booth at Renaissance on the Langley Bypass over on the Vancouver side, to feature a candle wall in the main part of the store. There will still be a case full of collectables, but the focus on our Danish Taper Candles makes more sense moving forward.

Starting in the Spring of 2015, we will introduce selected vintage and antique items to the main store, as it is getting very difficult to obtain Danish Iron new and some very cool candleholders come up if you keep your eyes open!

Meanwhile, we are through Thanksgiving and zooming towards Christmas! The big order from Denmark is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver on October, 22 so we will be loading the stock before the end of the month. Lots of new candles and much Scandinavian Christmas Decor... Always a lot of fun.

If you like us on Facebook, you will get a special treat: A free pair of H4 tapers in any colour, whenever you spend $20.00 or more. I find it's easiest to just google "Ladybug Boutique Victoria" and then follow the link to Facebook... There are thousands of Ladybug things on Facebook proper and it is tedious trying to find the right page.

Thanks to all of you who have continued to loyally support our, and many other, small businesses during this long period of economic difficulty. Small businesses give communities their unique flavour and it is great to be able to continue operating a special little store, in ours.

Cheers,

The Big Bug!

Lots of News! March 14 2013

Much activity in Ladybugland since the last post!

Our New Satellite Store is up and running at Renaissance Furniture on the Langley Bypass in Langley, BC, south of Vancouver. It is at 20560 Langley Bypass, (604.530.0692) on the right, when you are headed East.  The Langley Bypass is the extension of Highway # 10 and is easy to find. Of course, in this age of GPS and Google Maps, you just look it up!  We have set up our full selection of tapers, just like the home store, and have a selection of Danish Glass and Iron for you peruse, as well.  Renaissance Furniture specializes in reproduction and reworked furniture, with an emphasis on re-purposed wood and metal.  Many of the pieces are unique, specialty items you won't see anywhere else.

Part of the store is set up as a Vintage and Collectables Gallery, which is where we are!  If you are wondering why we would be there, given that the only thing in the main store that qualifies as vintage might be the staff and owners, well, that is because this location allows us to pursue our interest in Antiques and Collectables.  Which is why this location is called Ladybug Candles & Collectables!

Of course, we haven't been neglecting the main store either.  With the end of our much missed neighbour, Continental Kitchen, we have returned to our roots and introduced new lines of textiles. Runners, tea towels, dishcloths, potholders and a wide variety of woven and cork-backed placemats, from famous North American companies, compliment our existing Swedish linens from Ekelund and hand woven placemats from Lori Davies on Saltspring Island. The bright colours and patterns really feel like spring!

We are continuing to expand our candle selection, as well, with more colours in our Danish pillars and drop candles.  This is also a great year for glassware. New patterns from both our friends at Mad About Glass in North Vancouver and John and Ulrike Paulsen at Dansk Glaskunst, fill the section with still more colour.

All in all, much to see at both locations!

Mention this post and get a free pair of H4 tapers with any purchase over $20.00 at our Victoria store!

Enjoy Spring!

Ho Ho Ho November 29 2012

Well, Here we are, the end of November!

Christmas is in full swing and the elves are very busy...  All of the orders that were still outstanding the last time I wrote, are in.  We have received a great selection of tea-towels, runners and table squares in Christmas and winter patterns from Ekelund of Sweden, which will appeal to anyone with a fondness for colour. Our Bronze candelabras and holders from Harrogate House have arrived, as well. Italian quality and style for an elegant table.

Some things, like the electric candles from Abbott are going fast! We have the best price in town, as far as I can tell, for the "Real Flame" electric pillars and should sell out soon...

When you get to the store, look for the RED Dot, GREEN Dot, find a Dot and save a lot, price tags on various ornaments on the outside table and throughout the shop.  50% off regular on the red dots, 25% on the green.  My treat.  Who says I'm Grinchy!
